Kafenio is an elegant restaurant located at the heart of the European District, behind Palazzo Berlaymont, headquarters of the European Commission. The Greek word Kafenio means “meeting place,” and this is a good description of the venue which offers its guests a warm and relaxed atmosphere, with black leather chairs and a lounge bar. The latter area is furnished with modern art, and it provides the perfect setting for cocktails with unmistakable hints of Greece. A highlight of the décor is the wooden mosaic depicting the Grand Place and extending for the entire length of one of the walls.
The menu is updated twice a year and offers high-quality recipes, from starters right through to desserts. Only the freshest ingredients are used, many of which are imported directly from Greece. You could start with a selection of hot and cold fish starters, or with grilled octopus, Greek-style fried squid and Tarama sauce, before moving onto the flavoursome giant prawns with a cream of feta cheese, honey and lime. Even though the restaurant specialises in Greek cuisine, you will also find recipes from further afield such as the grilled lamb, typical of Ireland.
Open from Monday to Friday, midday-11pm, Saturday 6pm-11pm. Within these hours, the kitchen is open non-stop.
