Great cocktails in an enchanting atmosphere, perfect for a great start to a memorable evening. La Verre à Monique was created by Helen Calle-Lin, who was inspired by speakeasy atmospheres, with details such as the teapots in the cabinet (recalling U.S. prohibition when drinks were served in teapots) and hand-chipped ice, a reference to the same 1920s period when ice was delivered to bars in big blocks. There is outdoor seating on a quiet side street, the English garden-style terrace that opens in spring and summer.
The cocktail menu comprises the classics as well as original concoctions, such as Smoky Bear which does actually smoke as a result of its flaming topping, and Rose Martini, which contains a small rose. Other recipes are exceptional for their humorous names, such as the Large Hadron Colada and the Kama Samatra. Drinks can be accompanied by tapas-style nibbles from their own kitchen. Open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 5pm. Booking recommended.
