In Ford’s nomenclature, the letters “ST” (Sport Technologies) define sports models of more moderate temperament, with respect to the most extreme versions that are labelled “RS”. Nonetheless, the new Focus ST has generous power, 280 HP (420 Nm torque), just 70 less than the latest Focus RS, with which it shares the development by the Ford Performance team. Based on the global C2 platform and available in 5-door format, it has specifically-tuned suspension, brakes, transmission and engine. In fact, under the bonnet lies the same 2.3 EcoBoost as in the Focus RS and the Mustang, though in a version that is not so highly tuned. The Focus ST is also available in a diesel version, with a 2-litre 190 HP engine producing a torque of 400 Nm. Both versions have a limited-slip differential that improves cornering performance and stability.
Choose your driving style
Regarding transmission, you can choose between a manual 6-gear or a double-clutch 7-gear, which interface with the Drive Modes – controlled using the Sport button on the flat-base steering wheel – which enables you to modulate the car’s character according to the driving conditions. The Focus ST’s dynamics are hallmarked by the Continuously Controlled Damping, which improves the response of the variable-length double wishbone rear suspension, increasing comfort and agility. The new Focus ST also inherits the sporty steering of the Fiesta ST, with electronic power steering that is 15% faster than on other Focus models, requiring just two complete turns of the wheel to cover the entire turning radius. The braking system is also high-performance. The front disc has been enlarged to 330 x 27 mm, and the calipers are fitted with double pistons. The rear discs are 302 x 11 mm.
The supplementary instrumentation is based on the Ford GT supercar. Oil temperature and pressure indicators are now digital, shown on the 4.2-inch TFT colour display. All this suggests that this Ford was developed for customers with a passion for everything automotive; it combines exciting performance with the versatility of a family car. Inside, there are the wrap-around Recaro seats, and refined details such as the aluminium pedal covers with ST finish, and alloy pedal levers. The engine sound and exhaust notes are amplified when the car is in the Sport and Track modes. Exterior finish comprises front splitter, rear spoiler, double tailpipes framed by the extractor, and 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels. As regards infotainment, as for all Focus models, the car is fitted with the SYNC 3 system with 8-inch touchscreen, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and also fitted with the FordPass Connect integrated modem that turns the car into a Wi-Fi hotspot that can connect up to 10 devices.
The new Focus ST will be on sale across Europe from summer 2019.
