It’s an evocative combination: lake Como, one of the most famous landscapes in the world, with its villas, mountains and botanical gardens – and classic cars, an area that includes a vast amount of Italian engineering and artistic brilliance. Every year this fortunate fusion takes form during the last weekend of May, in the gardens of Grand Hotel Villa d’Este which, together with the BMW Group, manages and promotes the event. Over 50 of the most beautiful vintage and veteran cars, most built between the 1920s and the ‘80s, are in competition for the Concorso, with winners chosen by an international jury. In addition, a dozen of the latest concept cars and prototypes, expressions of the latest trends in the automotive sector, compete for the Concorso d’Eleganza Design Award. Saturday 26 May is a very exclusive event, by invitation only, at Villa d’Este. The public can admire the cars on Sunday 27 May, when they are exhibited in the park of Villa Erba, not far from Villa d’Este.
The classic cars in this year’s edition comprise some absolute masterpieces, such as the superb Lancia 12 HP Tipo 51 Alfa dated 1908, through to the Ferrari 365 GT/4 Berlinetta Boxer built in 1976, with many other beautiful and often unusual vehicles. On Saturday 26 May, visitors can admire a selection of vintage motorcycles in the gardens of Villa Erba from 9.30am to 5pm, and there is also a Motorcycle Street Run in which the classic bikes make the short journey from Villa Erba to Villa d’Este, on a route that runs through Cernobbio. On Sunday, the cars will be exhibited at Villa Erba from 9.30am to 5.30pm, with a special exhibition at the Central Pavilion that will reveal a world premier presentation. From 2.30pm to 5.30pm the public can watch the prize-giving from the stands, which is followed by a parade of all the vintage cars. We advise purchasing tickets in advance, as a result of the limited number of places available.
